Compensating for wear.-The transverse slide e of a brake-shoe f is adjusted on a longitudinal screw-threaded rod by means of a nut a which forms part of a sleeve h which is screwed on the rod d. The boss j of a weighted arm k is rotatably mounted on the sleeve and held in position by a collar. A lug o in the boss has a stud p on which a spring-controlled or weighted pawl q is pivoted. The arrangement enables the nut to be adjusted by moving the weighted arm k which is always left in the vertical position. Any tendency of the nut to slack back is resisted by the ratchetmechanism and weight of the arm k. In a modification, the ratchet-mechanism is dispensed with and an ordinary nut of the type locked by an unbalanced weight is employed. The weight is fitted over the nut and held in position by a set-screw, or is formed integrally with the nut.
