Abstract

195,802. Smith, I. Jan. 23, 1922. Feeding fibres to knitting-machines.-Fibres are fed to the hooks of vertically-arranged moving needles 5 of a machine for knitting pile fabrics, by pneumatic means consisting essentially of blawers 10, 18 arranged within a closed casing. A motor 22 drives the blower 10 by a belt 23 and drives also a pulley 25 and sprocket 15. A slotted conveyer 14 connects sprockets 15, 16. Feeding rollers or carding means 12, 13 arranged within a hopper 11 and driven by a belt 26 distribute fibres upon the conveyer 14 which carries them between a nozzle 9 of the blower 10 and a conduit 7. The fibres passing along the conduit impinge against the needles 5 at an enlargement 8 through an aperture 6 of which the needles project. The fibres not retained by the needle hooks pass by a return pipe 17 to the hopper. The fibres falling through the conveyer 14 are taken and returned by a shielding or gathering belt 19. According to the Provisional Specification the fibres are derived from a bat or sliver which is disintegrated by a paddle &c. and the fibres may be transferred by compressed air adapted to operated with an injector action. Other gas or steam may be used in place of air.
