Abstract

Wire ropes.-Wire ropes have a strand-support 5 comprising a narrow flat steel band or of flat wire, wound under tension on a fibre or other compressible core 4 so as to place the core under compression and prevent the disintegration thereof. A soft annealed band allows the core to be deformed, as shown in Fig. 3. If the band is of high carbon steel, bearing-wires 7, which may be of soft metal, are interposed between the band and the usual strands 6 so as to provide an extended bearing surface for the strands. The wires 7 may be previously shaped to the required configuration. A multiple core may be used, the individual strands of which are separately encased in bands of steel.
