Wire ropes.-A rope for use in drilling oil wells &c. comprises a core 1, either composed of round wires 2 or having a hempen centre and a metallic covering thereto, outer strands 3, each composed of twisted wires 4, laid around the core 1, and flat wire 5, softer than the wires of the outer strands, interposed, between the strands 3 and the core.
