Soles.-In the manufacture of footwear &c., india-rubber is attached to leather by vulcanizing with the aid of an accelerator such as described in Specifications 11530/13, 11615/13, 12777/13, or 12661/14, [all in Class 70, India-rubber &c.], or in the absence of an accelerator, the heat of vulcanization being as high as is compatible with the safety of the leather. The leather may be protected by interposing a sheet of asbestos &c. between it and the press plate, or the rubber may be heated by high pressure steam, and the leather by lower pressure steam, or not at all. The joint is improved by roughening the surface of the leather and impregnating it with rubber solution.
