Abstract

Vulcanized rubber sheet is made by adding to latex a vulcanizing agent and an accelerator, coagulating, sheeting, and drying at such a temperature that a substantially unvulcanized product is obtained, and maintaining it at atmospheric temperature for a long period, the accelerator being such, and added in such amount that vulcanization proceeds for a period of from one or two weeks to several months. An activator such as zinc oxide, fillers, colouring matter may also be added to the latex, the additions being preferably converted into aqueous dispersions. According to an example, a mix consisting of 100 lbs. of rubber as latex, 3 lbs. of sulphur, 9 lbs. of zinc oxide, 4 oz. of zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate and 8 oz. of colouring matter is coagulated, creped, and dried for 7-10 days at 70-120 DEG F. The dried sheets are laminated and stored for 3-6 months to vulcanize. Another accelerator specified is piperidine pentamethylenedithiocarbamate, which may be added in the proportion of 8 oz. to 100 lbs. of rubber. Such rubber resists ageing, can be joined with cold rubber solution, is very resilient, and resists abrasion and tearing.
