Abstract

Turning.-A measuring device for determining the thickness of packing required to bring the tool of a centre lathe to the correct height comprises a frame 1 secured to the tail stock and provided with a machined face 2 and adjustable graduated indicator 4 which may be fixed so that the height of the zero of its scale above the face 2 is equal to the distance between the lathe centres and the tool rest face. In operation the tool is placed on the face 2 with its point adjacent the scale which is graduated so as to indicate directly the thick ness of packing or the number of packing plates of different thicknesses necessary to bring the tool point to the level of the lathe centres. A pocket 6 is provided to contain the packing plates. In a modification, Fig. 4, the indicator comprises a quadrant member having a double-armed pointer 7 moving over a scale 9. The tool is placed on the face 2 with its point beneath the end 10 of the short arm and the thickness of packing required is read off directly on the scale 9.
