Abstract
195,443. Chemical Engineering Co. (Manchester), Ltd., and Spensley, J. W. Dec. 28, 1921. Preparing flour and meal from special materials; reduction processes; treatment by damping.-The husking and reduction of grain, seeds, or pips is effected by treatment in a series of pinned disc mills run at successively higher speeds with intermediate sieving or other separation. Wheat, for example, is passed into mills a, b and the product treated in sieves c, d. The throughs pass to a plansifter i to separate the break flour q, the semolina and middlings r passing to the reduction plant. The tailings from both sieves c, d pass to the second break e, which is followed by a sieve f from which the throughs pass to the same or another plansifter i and the tailings to the final break g, which runs at a very high speed. The products from the sieve h consist of break flour p and bran o, which is curled or curved in its natural form. The blast of air generated by the mills may be utilized to effect a preliminary separation, and according to the first Provisional Specification may be assisted by a blast or suction fan. The reduction plant may consist of ordinary roller mills, or of three pinned disc mills, to the first of which semolina is passed, flour being sifted from the product of the tailings returned to the mill. Middlings may be similarly treated in the second mill, while in the third dust is reduced, producing flour and sharps, which are separated by a sieve. The successive operations may be performed in the same machines by discontinuous running at appropriate speeds. In the removal of husks from locust bean pips the pips may be soaked in water or alkali before milling. Specifications 2224/10 and 186,462, [both in Class 59, Grinding, crushing, &c.], are referred to. According to the first Provisional Specification, certain of the breaks may be performed in roller mills. According to the second Provisional Specification, the germ and husk separated from locust-bean pips may be used as poultry food.
