Abstract

Vacuum tubes. - In a device in which an electron discharge is obtained, independently of the presence of traces of gas, by means of a sufficiently steep potential gradient at the surface of the cathode, one or more cathodes are made of or coated with highly electropositive substances. Such a cathode may be produced by coating an anode of relatively electronegative material, for instance, nickel, with a salt of an electropositive metal, and passing a discharge between the anode and cathode in an exhausted container. The electropositive metal thereby liberated at the salt-vacuum surface can be released by evaporation, for instance, by means of a highvoltage discharge, the metal being deposited on the cathode. If a relatively volatile metal such as sodium is used, a rise in temperature of the cathode should be avoided. Thorium may 'be used as the electropositive substance.
