Abstract

845,598. Cathode-ray storage tubes. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. Oct. 9, 1957 [April 1, 1957], No. 31560/57. Class 39(1). A storage screen for a direct-viewing storage tube comprises a conductive support mesh on one side of which is disposed a uniformly thick layer of dielectric material e.g. talc in granular form to provide a storage surface and a film of magnesium fluoride disposed over the storage surface. The granular storage layer is preferably between 1 and 2 mils thick, so that the layer has low bombardment-induced conductivity. The magnesium fluoride may be evaporated onto the storage surface 42, either before or after the aluminium collector grid 44 is placed in contact with the storage surface. This layer must be thick enough to give its characteristic secondary electron emission to the storage surface but must not be so thick as to form a continuous smooth film over the entire target thereby resulting in the loss of the stable range of operation obtained by breaking up the storage surface into granules. Thus the thickness of the film is preferably between 800 and 20,000 Angstroms. In a process of forming this film, the screen is disposed within a chamber above a boat containing magnesium fluoride to be evaporated. A lens is mounted at an adjustable distance from the boat and is illuminated by a sodium yellow lamp. If the lens is at the same distance from the boat as is the screen a film of “ wavelength thickness is formed at the first minimum of reflection and this thickness can be increased or decreased by moving the lens further from or closer to the boat.
