Abstract

1,135,493. Television pick-up tubes; photoconductive targets. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP. 10 March, 1966 [29 March, 1965], No. 10535/66. Headings H1D and H1K. A vidicon target comprises a transparent insulating film having a low dielectric constant deposited on a transparent conductive film and a double layer of photo-conductive material on the insulating film. A first deposited photoconductive coating comprises As 2 Se 3 , CdSe mixed with As 2 Se 3 , CdS mixed with As 2 Se 3 , or As 2 Se 2 S and has a thickness of about 0À2 to 0À3 microns to provide a porous layer having a density less than 10% of its normal bulk density. A second deposited photo-conductive coating comprises one of the above materials and is formed as a solid layer at approximately its normal bulk density, having a thickness of about 2 to 3 microns. The insulating layer may comprise cryolite (Na 3 AlF 6 ) having a dielectric constant of about 1À36 and has a thickness of 100 to 1500 angstroms. The conductive film, e.g. a tin compound or gold, is heated to a temperature of 100 to 250‹ C. and the cryolite evaporated on in a vacuum of about 10<SP>-6</SP> torr. The photo-conductive layers are then successively evaporated on, the first layer in an atmosphere of argon at a pressure of about 100 microns and the second layer in a vacuum of about 10<SP>-5</SP> torr.
