Abstract

195,197. Thornycroft & Co., Ltd., J. I., and Mackie, R. Jan. 14, 1922. Ventilation systems and apparatus. -To enable the personnel of naval craft to carry out their duties without the aid of gas masks when the vessel enters or is enveloped in a gas cloud, certain compartments to which air is supplied in a purified condition are isolated from the remainder of the vessel and are reserved for the use of the crew. For example, the stokehold b is isolated from adjacent boiler rooms a, c by bulkheads d fitted with air locks f. The forced draught for the boiler rooms is effected by geared turbo-fans g, and the air for the stokehold is drawn by fans &c. through ventilators k and a box containing purifying substances. The parts in the boiler room which require manipulation can be operated from the stokeholds by extension spindles passing through the bulkhead, or the bulkhead may be recessed as at p to allow access to the requisite parts.
