Abstract

1,066,416. Stabilizing ships. JOHN J. McMULLEN ASSOCIATES Inc. Sept. 21, 1865 [Sept. 22, 1964], No. 40241/65. Heading B7M. A passive pitch stabilization system (16), Fig. 1 (not shown), for a ship (10) is mounted in the bow section (12) and comprises an intake opening (18) at or near the extreme front end of the ship and an outlet (20) on each side of the after portion of the bow section. A pair of overhead pipes (22) join inlets (22b) in the intake opening (18) to outlets (20) and another pair of pipes (24), below pipes (22), join inlets (24b) also to outlets (20). A flapper or valve (26), controlled by operating means (28), is hinged in the intake (18) for selective opening and closing of the respective inlets for pipes (22) and (24). In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the pitch stabilization system comprises a bow subsystem (32), which includes a tank (40), and a stern subsystem (34) which includes tank (46). Either the bow or stern subsystem can be employed independently of the other.
