Abstract
1,030,812. Stabilizing ships. MUIRHEAD & CO. Ltd. Feb. 18, 1965 [March 2, 1964; Nov. 6, 1964; Dec. 4, 1964], Nos. 8775/64, 46448/64 and 49342/64. Heading B7M. A stabilizing system for a floating body includes a non-return valve which controls the flow of liquid through the channel connecting the tanks disposed one on each side of the floating body. In the passive system illustrated in Fig. 1 (not shown), tanks A and B are disposed one on each side of a ship 1 and are connected by two channels 2 and 3. Non-return valves 4 and 5 are disposed in channels 2 and 3 at the entrances to tanks A and B, both respectively. Flow of water between the tanks A and B is regulated by control valves 6 and 7 disposed in channels 2 and 3 respectively and which respond to signals from gyroscope sensing means 8 routed through hydraulic relay 9. Undesirable flow of water from tank B to tank A is prevented by non-return valves 4 and 5. Further embodiments include a single channel for the transfer of liquid in both directions and means to resist the flow of liquid in the connecting channel or channels should the power supply fail.
