Abstract
1,005,535. Stabilizing ships. JOHN J. McMULLAN ASSOCIATES Inc. June 8, 1964 [June 13, 1963], No. 23705/64. Headings B7M and B7S. A vessel's stabilizing system comprises at least one liquidtight transverse bulkhead 31 extending across the vessel, at least one longitudinal bulkhead 40 (Fig. 3) disposed normal to said bulkhead 31, the bulkheads 31, 40 defining at least two tanks arranged across the hull, a plurality of openings 24 in said at least one longitudinal bulkhead, and a body of liquid in said tanks at a level in repose which is between the lowest and highest of said openings, the liquid flowing through the openings in response to rolling of the vessel, which openings cause a dissipation of energy of the liquid as it flows therethrough. The size of the openings may be adjusted by a sliding valve-type of mechanism as in Fig. 8, the quantity and direction of flow of the liquid (through openings 86 in bulkhead 90) may be controlled by valve gates 82 hinged to the. bulkhead at 70 and operated by a control rod 80. The longitudinal bulkhead may be constructed with double walls 43, 45 (Fig. 10), the finished openings 53 therethrough being provided by sleeves 50. If the longitudinal bulkhead is corrugated, as 57 in Fig. 12, the openings 55 may be lined with a sleeve 52. Specification 962,343 is referred to.
