Abstract
1,146,915. Steering ships. KARLSTADS MEKANISKA WERKSTAD A.B. 6 May, 1966 [7 May, 1965], No. 20011/66. Heading B7V. The hull 1 of a ship has in its fore-part steering gear consisting of a propeller 3 arranged in transverse tunnel 5 and with apertures 7 and 9 in the sides of the hull and screens 11 situated just behind the tunnel apertures with respect to the direction in which the ship moves. In Fig. 2, one screen 11 is shown pushed from the aft edge of the aperture 7 in a plane mainly transverse to the direction of travel of the ship so as to assist a turn to port. The screens 11 may be drawn in or swung-in in recesses against the tunnel apertures when the steering device is not in use. In other embodiments the screens can be brought to cover the tunnel apertures when not in use. The screens may have locking devices and all functions of the steering gear can be controlled by one steering lever only.
