Abstract

Jacks.-In jacks of the kind in which the base is formed in two parts 1, 2 which are capable of relative motion by means such as worm gear or rack-and-pinion mechanism, the sliding, motion is produced by rack-and-pinion means actuated by double-acting pawl-and-ratchet mechanism 16, 18. Struts 20 pivoted at one end to the pillar 6 are pivoted at the other end to carriages 22 which slide upon the T-shaped lower portion 23 of the head 19. Pawls 25 mounted on the carriages engage teeth 24 on the head.
