Jacks.-In ratchet jacks having the lifting-pillar 2, or a chain, engaged by a pawl 7 mounted on the handle 5 and a pawl 9 on the casing 1, the pawls are maintained in position for raising, Fig. 1, or for lowering, Fig. 2, by springs 13, 14, 15 carried by a rocking bar 12. When the springs are set for lowering, oh the downward movement of the handle, the pawl 7 is guided by an inclined surface 24 on the casing into engagement with the rack towards the end of the stroke, thereby raising the rack sufficiently to enable the pawl 9 to become disengaged. On reversal of the movement of the handle, the pillar and pawl 7 move down together until the projection 7<a> of the pawl 7 bears against the pawl 9 and forces it into engagement with the rack at the same time as the spring 15 disengages the pawl 7. Antifriction rollers 22 are provided at the top of the casing.' When the jack is used for pulling down trees, or hauling a motor car out of boggy ground, the chain which takes the place of the pillar 2 is attached to the object to be moved, and the jack is secured to a stationary object by a rope connected to the shackle 25.
