Lever load-handling appliances.-In lever- and-ratchet hauling-apparatus for removing pit props, special means are provided for preventing the load chain from moving backwards while the ratchet box and lever are readjusted on the ratchet bar to get a fresh grip on the load chain. A three-sided box is secured to, or formed on, the end of the ratchet bar B<2> and supports four guide-pegs H for the load chain F, a peg D carrying a spring-pivoted pawl E, and a second peg C for anchoring both ends of the spring G. As the chain is drawn to the left during the hauling operation, the pawl is raised by the vertical links and falls again to engage each horizontal link so as to prevent movement of the chain in the reverse direction. The pawl may be raised by the lever E<1> to draw the chain back to engage another prop.
