Abstract

191,920. Hammond, E. V. Dec. 8, 1921. Piston packing; connecting - rods.- In a two-stroke cycle internal-combustion engine leakage of combustible mixtures from the transfer port d. Fig. 1, to the exhaust port c round the piston, is prevented by the employment of a split sleeve b, or a number of superposed split rings, or a helical packing - ring. The piston body is reduced in diameter to accommodate the ring b which is preferably secured by a junk ring h. A split ring g is placed at each end of the sleeve b to cover the split in the sleeve, which is preferably arranged at the exhaust port c. The sleeve may cover the ends of the gudgeon-pin and secure it in position, or may be perforated to permit insertion of the gudgeon-pin. In the latter case the ends of the gudgeon-pin may project into the perforations in the sleeve and prevent its rotation, or, as shown in Fig. 3, screw or other plugs l inserted into the bore of the gudgeon-pin bosses may secure the gudgeon-pin and prevent rotation of the sleeve b.
