Work-holders; protecting parts of machines.- An appliance for use in grinding sad irons, box irons, and other articles having handles &c. similarly disposed comprises an auxiliary table or housing A having apertures b<1>, through which the handles of the articles e project. The housing A is bolted upon the table of a grinding- machine and is provided with a channel a<2>, by which water drains away. Lips t<1> around the aperture b<1> ensure that water shall drip clear of boxes D, in which clamping-devices are located. Boxes or holders C are bolted to the housing A and have apertures, which correspond to the plan of the iron e and are of such a size as to receive one or more liners c, the innermost having its internal dimensions the same as the external dimensions of the iron. The ledge f of the iron e rests upon an inner liner d. The liners may be secured in position by set-screws. Shafts E, which are journaled in the boxes D secured to the housing, are each provided with a. bevel-wheel F and a handle or hand-wheel G. Each wheel F meshes with a wheel H pivotally carrying an arm i provided with a spring k, which is adapted to press upon the handle of the iron and keep it in place. The arm i has projections, which engage abutments on the wheel H so as to limit its pivotal movement. Each handle G is retained in position by a detent m thereon engaging a rack n. On lifting a handle G, the corresponding spring k is withdrawn from over the handle of the iron and a lower arm i<1>, which together with a spring k<1> is mounted on the wheel H in a similar manner to the arm i, presses on the underside of the handle of the iron and lifts it off the liner d. The housing A may be arranged to rotate beneath the grinding- wheels. In place of the detents m and the racks n, the handles G may be weighted to keep them down. The arms i, i' may be arranged to press directly upon the handle of the iron.
