Abstract

1,172,398. Grinding. COBURN MFG. CO. Inc. 27 Oct., 1967 [28 Oct., 1966], No. 49004/67. Heading B3D. [Also in Division F2] A movable housing for enclosing a lens grinding chamber comprises a top cover 42 mounted for rotation on a support arm 46, and a skirt 40 depending from the top cover and having a lower end disposed in an annular chamber 31 formed in a coolant pan 14 by flanges 30, 32. Coolant is supplied through pipework 36, 38 and drains through an aperture 39, the level of liquid in the annular chamber 31 serving as a seal for the skirt to prevent the escape of fumes. A work-holder is inserted through an aperture provided with sealing flaps 66 and an abrading tool is inserted through an aperture 24 of a back plate 18 to which the support arm 46 is secured by screws 59. Spring members 74, provided one each side, serve as a seal between the skirt and the back plate and as a self-centring device. In operation, the sweep of the abrading tool causes the support arm, back plate and pan to rotate about a pivot 33, causing the ends of the spring members 74 next to the back plate to unroll and roll up on their respective spools which are disposed in recesses 28, 28<SP>1</SP> in the back plate.
