Abstract

909,038. Bacteria, counting. RUSSELL, A. A. W. April 5, 1961 [April 14, 1960], No. 13537/60. Class 81 (1). [Also in Group XX] Apparatus for use in counting the number of bacteria on the surface of a member comprises a holder for the member, a screen projection means for projecting an image of a portion of the surface on to the screen, and means for effecting relative rotary movement between said projecting means and holder about the axis of symmetry of said holder so that images of different parts of the surface move past datum mark(s) on the screen and the bacteria on the surface may therefore be counted. In the apparatus shown, a bottle 11, the internal surface of which has been coated with bacterial colonies in a culture medium by partially filling the bottle with said medium and rotating it by means of fourrollers, is placed in a holder 10 which is mounted on a screw-threaded support 12 and is illuminated by a lamp 36. The support 12 may be rotated in either direction by a variable speed electric motor 25 acting through gearing 18-24 and through a belt 16. The bottle 11 may thus be moved in a helical path so that each part of its surface in turn is situated at the focal point of a projection lens system 35, 36 and images of the surface of the bottle move across a screen 37. The screen has a datum line so that the bacterial colonies in the bottle may be counted as their images pass the line.
