Abstract
10,047. Bekker, L., and Lilienstern, L. July 9. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Projectiles ; projectile fuses.-Relates to projectiles, such as grenades, provided with a direct-action percussion fuse of the kind which is armed during flight by the action of the air upon a vaned member secured to the firing- pin. According to this invention, the body of the projectile, which carries the detonator, has a slidable head separated from the body by a spring and carrying the firing-pin, the head and the vaned member being preferably protected by a detachable cover. The fuse comprises a screw-pin g which acts as the striker and carries the windvanes h, the pin being mounted in a threaded plug f in a cap e displaceably arranged on the nose of the body a of the projectile. The cap e may be removably secured, as shown in Fig. 1, by means of a rotary gapped ring m, engaging with a fixed pin k, which passes through a slot in the cap, or by means of a rotatable headed stud engaging in a slot in the cap, the slot being widened at the upper end. A spring l is interposed between the cap e and the nose. A protecting- cover o, loosely mounted so as to fall off when the projectile is thrown, is preferably provided, and may be normally secured by a safety-pin p, which, when in place, blocks the path between the striker g and the percussion cap c of the detonator d, An alternative safety device consists of an internal projection on the cover o, adapted to enter between two of the vanes h. During the flight of the projectile, the action of the air on the wind-vane rotates the striker g so that its pointed end protrudes through the plug f into a position in which it can strike the cap c when the parts e, a are relatively displaced by impact. The projectile may have a tubular handle u and may also have a tail consisting, for example, of a tassel (not shown). which is secured by a cord or the like w, preferably located within the tubular handle. In a modification, the tassel is secured to the tube u by bent tongues formed therein.
