Abstract
10,057. Elia, G. E. April 27. Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Relates mainly to bombs intended to be dropped or projected from aerial vessels, and also to bombs discharged from guns, and has for its object to make the bomb explode at a definite distance above the ground. According to the invention, (1) the bomb is provided with a precursory member in combination with a spring-controlled trigger which releases the firing-member when the precursory member touches the ground; and (2) the firing-device is cocked by a parachute, which is retarded relatively to the bomb, or by the bomb itself being retarded relatively to the precursory member. In the form shown in the safe position in Fig. 4, when the bomb is dropped, a parachute C unwinds its cable c<1>, rotates a drum A<2>, and thus draws a trigger A<x> out of a locking recess a<1x>, and at the same time compresses the spring of the hammer a<3>; and the precursory member B unwinds its cable B' and pulls on the other arm of the trigger A<x> overcoming the tension of a spring A<4>. When the weight B touches the ground, the spring A rocks the trigger and releases the hammer which fires the bomb. In a modification, the parachute is omitted, and the drum of the cable B<1> is arranged within the bomb, and by its rotation cocks the hammer spring and unlocks the trigger. The weight B may also contain an explosive charge which is fired by the impact of the weight with the ground. When the bomb is to be discharged from a gun, it. is enclosed in a shell which is burst by a time fuse while in the air, the bomb thus liberated falling and acting as described above.
