[Addition to 25,121/13, Class 113 (i), Ship and boat fittings &c.] Operating doors by springs and toothedgear mechanism.-In a modification of the self-opening hatches for ships as described in the parent Specification, the hatch is of the sliding type which, in the act of being opened, tensions the s p i r a l spring 13 through the medium of rack-and-pinion or chain gearing. The sliding hatches 1 run on rollers 3. The hatches are closed and the springs 13 wound up by operating shafts 17, which act through bevel and spur gearing 15, 16, and 8, 9. A pawl and ratchet-wheel 20, 19 retain the hatches in the closed position. To provide for varying the tension of the spring, the pinions 9 are detachably mounted by screws 11 so that the spring can be wound by the bevel-gearing 15, 16. The tension on the pinions in the closed position is relieved by pins 26 on the hatches engaging between adjacent teeth of the pinions.
