Abstract

22,599. Bacon, R. H. S., and Redpath, R. Dec. 29, 1913. Submarine vessels. - Folding shutters or hatches are provided for the gun-wells of submarine vessels, so that, when in the open position, they can be used as a working platform for the gun crew. To the vertical sides i of the well is hinged a folding shutter comprising inner and outer portions l, m. The inner portion is keyed on a shaft n fitted with bevelpinions n<1> in gear with vertical shafts o on the well walls i, which shafts o are operated by hydraulic gear p<1>. The outer portion m of each shutter is pivoted to the inner portion l and is housed above such inner portion when the well is closed. Shafts q, at each end of the purtion l, are fitted with bevel-wheels at each end in gear with a fixed wheel on the well and a wheel on the hinge shaft s, so that the outer portions m unfold as the shutter is opened. Supports t operated by spur gearing from the hydraulic gear p<1> swing out as the hatch opens.
