Abstract

4054. Royce, F. H., and Rolls-Royce, Ltd. March 15. Electro-magnetic switches.-An electric motor w used as turning-gear is controlled by a switch t, which, through relays, couples the motor to the engine and works a main switch. With the switch t closed, current first passes through the coil d of the clutch-actuating solenoid and through coils n, n' to the motor, which rotates slowly. The attraction of the coil n, together with the action of the springs, overcomes the attraction of the coil n' on the armature o and keeps the main switch open. As soon as the clutch armature b is attracted by the coil d, the circuit through the coil n is broken at the switch h, h'. The second coil n' then rocks the armature to close the contacts p, p<1>, whereupon the motor receives the full battery current through the low resistance holding-coil q. When the engine increases in speed, the overrunning clutch opens and rocks the armature b back to the position shown. At the same time, the back electromotive force generated in the motor weakens the current in the coil q, so that the main switch opens. If, after the electric motor is coupled to the engine, the latter does not start properly, the main switch may be reopened by closing the switch t and allowing current to flow through the coil n. Carbon contacts r, r<1> on the main switch open after and protect the main contacts p, pl.
