Abstract

3072. Edlin, G. S. Feb. 25, 1914, [Convention date]. Propelling by reaction of explosives and by water jets.-An automatic valve 15, which is of greater area on one side of its pivot 16 than on its other side, controls the explosion chamber 2 and the flow through the pipe 1 leading from stem to stern. After a compressed charge of combustible gas is exploded by the sparking- plug 12, the valve 15 assumes the position shown in dotted lines. The valve spindle or pivot 16 carries a spring - controlled arm adapted to engage, in its extreme positions, one of a pair of stops (not shown) carried by the pipe 1. A pivoted lever is also fitted for reversing. The electric circuit is automatically closed for firing the charge by a timing-cylinder and piston. In a modification, a single valve such as 15 is used in conjunction with two explosion chambers.
