Abstract
21,795. Buckley, C. A. M. Oct. 30. Powder-seal valves.-A powder-seal gas valve comprises a chamber containing, for example, sand which is caused to rise and fall by mechanical means or by fluid pressure and thereby seal and unseal a passage for the passage of gas. In the duplex arrangement of such a valve shown in Fig. 3 adapted as a reversing or turn-over valve for the passage of gases to a. heat regenerator, the valve chambers consist of V-shaped passages a with connecting- passages b, c containing the sealing-powder and a worm conveyer e. The rotation of the conveyer causes the transference of the powder from one chamber a to the other, and thus the opening and closing, respectively, of the passages a. By means of a pipe g sealed at the top by a transparent material, it can be readily seen whether the valve is open or closed; or the tube can be fitted with electric contacts to operate an audible or visible signal. The valve may be opened by running out powder by gravity, and the powder may be moved by a plunger or by compressed air or suction.
