Abstract

184,911. Milner, H. L., and Beeby, A. R.. May 31, 1921. Lift valves; diaphragm valves.-In a valve or cock of the type in which a flexible valve member e in the form of a chamber or diaphragm is first moved towards its seat and the final closure effected by the fluid pressure expanding or flexing the valve member, a normally closed aperture j in the valve member is opened by the initial closing operation, to admit the pressure fluid. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a cap b in screw arrangement with the outside of the main casing a controls the closure of the valve e, of rubber or other material, on its seat at the end of the portion c of the casing. The valve e is held in a cap or container f closed at its back, and spun over at its edge f<1> to pinch the valve e and to hold in place, or itself form, a guard ring g or may be arranged in the head of the cap b. In the closure oooration the head of the screw h which is normally held by fluid pressure against the valve e is moved therefrom by the flexing of the diaphragm e as it comes into contact with the casing c and allows the pressure fluid to enter behind the valve e and effect a tight final closure by the unbalanced pressure. The abutment of the container f on the casing at a<3> prevents the valve from being damaged by undue mechanical pressure. In another modification shown in Fig. 2, the hole i<1> in the valve chamber e<1> may be placed eccentrically to prevent closure when the wall of the chamber is flexed inwards by contact with the seating
