WAT E R-=-.\IA LV E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 643,076, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed November 2, 1898. Serial No. 695,335. (No model.)
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of the Valve and surrounding case 5 Fig. 2, a top view of valve and case, half in section on the line A B of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a topview of valve.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views. I
The case 0, in which the valve moves, is connected at E with the water main or pipe. Figs. 1 and 2.)
F is a hollow cylinder having a cross-bar G,
to which is attached the valve-stem II, as shown in Fig. 1.
Fitted to the case 0 is the gland I, which forms the stuffing-box J, as shown in Fig. 1.
L shows the gland I cupped to receive a leatherband. (See Fig.1.) Thisbandisriveted to the gland at the upper edge, the lower edge of the band being beveled toward the valve, thus any water passing the packing in box enters back of the leather band, forcing it against the valve, thus preventing any leakage.
(See.
The case C is larger than the valve F, allowing the water to entirely surround the valve, (see Fig. 1,) thus presenting no resistance to the opening or closing of the valve, the valve 0 requiring only power sufficient to overcome the friction in the stuffing-box, the water entering and discharging as shown by the ar rows.
The valve-seat M is bored to an angle of about sixty degrees, and the valve, having an angle of about forty-five degrees, can be worked by a cam-lever or other device, with a spring attached to avoid a shock.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the cylindrical valve F and a concentric stuffing-box provided with clamping-screws and an internal groove L for packing, a casing provided with an outlet and valve-seat at its bottom, a lateral inlet,
a raised upper part adapted to receive the said stuffing-box and an inwardly-presented annular rib for guiding the said valve, the latter fitting at the bottom into the said seat and being of less diameter than the bore of the said casing in which it works, in order that there may be a space for fluid around said valve to the level of the said stuffingbox, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN W. VAN BRQOKLIN.
