Be it known that I, ALFRED CLARKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets or Cocks, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in faucets; and the main object of my invention is the provision of a faucet in which I employ a Valve which is independent of a stem, being operated by a cam, and which will allow the passage of air into the outlet-pipe when the water is cut off, thus allowing water to flow out and prevent freezing.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a faucet which is self-closing without employing springs.
Another object of myinvention is the pro- Vision of a faucet which is Very simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction and very efficient and practical in use.
To attain the desired objects, the invention consists of a faucet embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the faucet. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the cam, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of the valve.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates the inlet-pipe, which is connected and in communication with the faucet casing or body B. This casing is provided with the threaded opening C to receive the plug C', the projecting lug or boss D, through which passes the stem E, which is provided with the small end F, fitting in the socket G, upon the interior of the casing near the mouth Hthereof. This stem is provided with the exterior ring J, which is adapted to fit on the seat in the mouth of the boss D, and a cap K and packing L are adapted to fit around the stem and be secured tothe boss D, as shown in Figs. l and 2. Mounted upon the squared portion M of the stem is the cam N, which is adapted to Contact the disk O upon the end of the wings P of the valve Q, which is provided with the head R and the annular groove S to receive a flexible or hard (such as metallic or ber) packing-ring T, said ring being adapted to normally engage or contact the rim of seat U, constituting a ring or edge of an annular projection upon the inside of the casing. Upon the outer end of the stem is a hand-wheel V.
From this description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation of my faucet is readily understood and its numerous advantages fully appreciated; but,brieflystated, it is as follows: When the faucet is closed, the lower end of the Valve rests upon the short outer edge of the cam, and as the stem is turned the cam causes the valve to rise, allowing the water-to How through the channels made by the spaces between the wings of the mouth, and when the stem is turned to close the valve the pressure of the water assists in moving the cam and shuts the valve.
This faucet is or can be used as a self-closing one without employinghsprings, as it will close by the pressure of the water on the top of the valve, the cam being placed in such a position as to allow the pressure upon the Valve to turn the stem. It can also be operated so thatthe valve will remain open constantly by having a smaller-sized cam which will present the point of the cam under the center of the valve, holding it wide open. ByV
reason of the valve being made independently vof the stem a partial vacuum created in the pipe when the water is shut off will raise the -valve and admit air into the pipe, causing the water to run out, and thus prevent freezing.
From this description it is evident that I provide a faucet which is the embodiment of simplicity and durability, and thus producing a thoroughly eflicient and practical faucet.
