\ IMPROVEMENT IN STOP-VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,399, dated March 5, 1872.
Specification describing an Improved Stop- Valve, invented by JAMES WALSH, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania.
Improvement in Stop Valves.
My invention consists of certain improvements, too fully explained hereafter to need preliminary description, in the stop-valve for which Letters Patent were granted to me on the 6th day of June, A. D 1871, the said improvements having been designed, mainly, with the view of preventing leakage at the top of the casing, especially when the valve is raised from its seat without the aid of any elastic packing.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved stop-valve; Fig. 2, the same, showing the valveraised from its seat; Fig. 3, a sectional plan on the line 1 2, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a view of a modification.
The valve, as shown in the drawing, is made in the form of a draw-cock or faucet, suitable for wash-basins, bath-tubs, 850., the casing A, branch or supply-pipe B, and curved outletnozzle O, being cast in one piece; but, when arranged as a stopvalve for hot-water or steamheating pipes, to which my invention is especially applicable, the casing is provided at the bottom with short threaded branches, to which the supply and discharge-pipes are attached in the manner illustrated in my aforesaid patent of June 6, 1871. The supplypipe B communicates with the interior of the casing A, through an opening, to, directly be neath the valve D, the latter consisting of the semi-spherical portion 1), adapted to a similarlyshaped seat, 11 in the bottom of the casing, and a cylindrical portion, b upon the exterior of which is cut a screw-thread adapted to a corresponding internal thread formed in a hollow plug, F, which is screwed into the casing, and has .a flange, d, resting upon the top of the latter. The valve D is operated by a rod, H, which passes through an opening in the center of the screw-cap I of the casing, and is reduced at its lower end, so as to form a square or oblong stem h, adapted to a similarly-shaped recess in the valve. On the rod H is a disk or supplementary valve, J, accurately turned and ground on its under side, and adapted to a ground seat on the upper edge of the screwplug F, and between the said disk and the under side of the cap I of the case, and surrounding the rod H, is a spiral spring, 70, the object of which is to maintain the disk or valve J constantly and firmly in its seat with a slightly-elastic pressure, and to prevent the withdrawal of the squared stem of the operating-rod from the recess in the valve D. On turning the rod H the screw-valve D will also be turned, and will, consequently, be raised from or lowered into its seat; but the disk J, although caused to turn with the rod, will, owing to the pressure of the spring, be constantly maintained in its ground seat, and will, therefore, effectually prevent leakage from the top of the casin g without the aid of any elastic packing, the valve, owing to the absence of such objectionable packing, being especially applicable to hot-water or steam-heating pipes.
I11 my aforesaid patent of June 6, 187], the lower valve did not turn in its seat, but was simply raised and lowered by a threaded stem, to which the upper disk-valve was secured. The latter was, therefore, liable to be lifted by a continued movement of the screwstem after the lower valve had been forced down into its seat, an objection which it will be evident is fully overcome in the present arrangement.
For a cheap class of valves the screw-plug F can be dispensed with, as shown in Fig. 4, and the screw-valve D be adapted directly to an internal thread cut in the casing, and the disk-valve J to a ground seat formed at the upper edge of the latter, but I prefer to employ the said screw-plug, as it can be readily removed when its internal screw-thread and valve-seat become worn, and be replaced by a new one.
The various parts of my improved stop-valve may be made of any suitable metal, or of hard rubber, or other material.
