Combinations of interdependent valves; seats. -A cylindrical lift valve, which works within a seat consisting of a ring of packing- material, is provided with a cylindrical shield to protect the packing from the scoring action of the fluid when the valve is open. The valve 6 works within a seating 10 formed of a packing-ring held in position by a gland 12. A spring-pressed cylindrical shield 14 protects the packing 10 from the action of the fluid when the valve is open, and forms the initial closure in conjunction with the lower face of the valve 6. When the valve 6 is screwed down to the completely closed position, it presses the shield 14 away from the seating 10. A modification is described in which the inlet and outlet of the valve are at right-angles to one another. In this case, the cylindrical shield forms the outlet of the tap.
