Combing-machines. - In a Heilmann combing- machine, the upper feedroll 6, Fig. 1, which is of smaller diameter than the lower roll 4, is held on the forward side of such roll, so that their common tangent slopes down towards the comb cylinder 13. The lower feed-roll 4 is supported on a stepped-back portion 2 of the upper margin of the frame uprights 1. The two feedrolls are provided with sharp intermeshing flutes to grip the lap. The piecing-rolls 17, 18 are given the usual intermittent motions. The ends of the roll 17 are encased in sleeves 17<b>, Fig. 3, supported by a pillow block 20 and by a slabbed side resting against a block 22, carried in a bracket 23. The detaching-roll 16 is supported in a slot in the block 22, a sleeve 16<b> on the roll having slabbed sides to engage the slot. The detaching-roll is pressed backwardly and the piecing-roll 17 is pressed forwardly against the roll 18 by a saddle 24 connected to a weighted lever 26, the fulcrum 27 of which may be adjustable to vary the load on the rolls. The detaching-segment 15 has its surface slightly higher than the points of the needles 12. The detaching-roll is supported in a position to clear the needles and yet to engage the segment 15 and yield upwardly to its impact by bearing-surfaces rotating with the cylinder 13 and engaging bosses on the detaching-roll shaft. The dimensions of the surfaces and bosses are such as to rotate the detaching-roll at a slightly higher speed than the detaching - segment. The detaching - roll may be supported on the bearing-blocks only immediately in front of the detaching-segment, or rest against adjustable screws working through holes in the blocks 22. The saddle 24 may be rocked forwardly about the roll 17 to allow the roll 16 to be removed without disturbing the weights on the lever 26.
