Abstract

1,132,093. Drafting apparatus; stop motions. MAREMONT CORP. 6 Oct., 1965 [7 Oct., 1964], No. 42454/65. Headings DID and DIN. Drafting-mechanism comprises at least two pairs of rollers and a control bar positioned against the material being drafted between the pairs of rollers, whereby the strand is deflected partially around the periphery of one of the first pair of rollers taken in the direction in which the strand is moving, means for adjusting the control bar to adjust the size and position of the gap between it and said one roller, the control bar having a convex surface adjacent said one roll merging into a concave surface facing the nip between the said first rollers. In Fig. 3, three pairs of rollers 24, 22, 30, 28 and 34, 32 are provided the strand, moving from right to left, and 30, 28 being the first pair referred to above. The plane through the rotational axes and the nip of the rollers 30, 28 lies forwardly of the plane at right angles to the drafting field so that the strand on leaving the nip is deflected for a distance along the surface of the upper roll. A bar 54 which is adjustable at 56, further deflects the strand; it has a profiled surface 58 facing the nip of the rollers 30, 28 and a rounded snubbing surface 60. Associated with the pair 24, 22 is an additional upper roller 26 which can be removed for longstaple fibres. Each upper roller is mounted in blocks e.g. 40, Fig. 5, slidable in a slot 38 in a member 36, which is fixed, except in the case of the rear top roller 34 where the blocks are adjustable along bars 48. The rollers are preferably fluted and magnetically-loaded. Each block 40 has a lateral extension 74, with an adjustable set-screw 76 normally bearing on the plunger of a switch 70. When a lap occurs on the associated roller, the roller is raised to release the plunger and actuate a stop-motion. The drafting rollers are driven by the front lower roll 22 which is geared to the other bottom rolls and is provided with an auxiliary drive as described in Specification 1,132,094. Beyond the drafting apparatus, Fig. 2, are fluted calender rollers as described in Specification 1,132,095 comprising one, 92 meshing with two others 94, 96 disposed as shown to deflect the strand path through a right angle. For conducting the strand from the drafting rollers to a trumpet 138 in front of the calender rollers, there is a gathering-plate 134 extending along the length of the rollers and conical and tubular parts 134, 136. The guide is pivotally mounted and a stop motion may be actuated on movement of the pivot 131.
