Abstract

17,887. Haddan, R., [Wear, C.]. July 28. Clutches, friction and claw; universal joints; operating clutches.-In combined cone or plate friction clutches and positive clutches, the central plate 6 has lugs with rounded ends 6' engaging recesses in a boss 25 on the driving- shaft 1 in order to compensate for errors in alinement of the shafts. Blocks 7, secured on rounded lugs 10 on the plate 6 by bolts 8 and sockets 9, engage a plate 3, keyed to the driven shaft 2, and a plate 11 connected by bolts 12 with the plate 3. The bolts 12 carry eyes 14, in which are pivoted levers 16 with cam heads 17 engaging blocks 18 sliding on the plate 3. The drive between the plates 3, 11 is taken by interengaging lugs carried by the two plates. Springs 24 normally separate the parts, engagement being produced by operating a lever 22. A sliding sleeve 28 with lugs 30 engaging recesses in the boss 25 may be engaged, by means of a lever 34, with lugs 32 on the plate 11 to produce a positive drive between the shafts. A spring 36 connected to the lever 34 is then fitted over a hook 39 on the lever 22 so that, in the event of the sleeve 28 fouling the lugs 32, proper engagement ensues when slip occurs in the friction clutch.
