Abstract

17,131. Kahan, S., [Yapolsky, N. S.]. July 20. Selenium cells.-A selenium cell is made by immersing a mould, comprising bridges a', k<1>, Fig. 5, with linear teeth a<2>, k<2>, into liquid or plastic selenium under diminished pressure and cooling the selenium under increased pressure, after which the base of the mould uniting the bridges a<1>, k<1> is removed either mechanically or chemically. In a modification the mould has curved teeth. The mould for the cell shown in Fig. 5 is made by electrolytically depositing about a core A' of a metal, alternate layers of this metal and another metal, as shown in Fig. 10. A section of the block so obtained is polished and acted upon by a solvent which reacts on one of the metals more than the other, thereby forming the linear teeth of the mould. The parts of the surface required to form the bridges are covered with a substance upon which the solvent does not act. The mould may be cast or stamped from a mould made as described above. Specification 3927/91, which describes a selenium cell the conducting-strips of whiich are separated by paper and connected alternately to bridge strips, is referred to.
