Hammers of the kind in which the head is fitted with a buffer of rubber. leather, &c. extending beyond the striking- face to protect the surface into which a nail &c. is driven have the head provided with a groove to receive the buffer. As shown, the hammer head 3 is formed with an annular groove 4 near to its striking- face and the buffer 7 is formed as a ring with flanges 9 to engage in the groove.
