Abstract

7676. Dawson, Sir A. T., and Buckham, G. T. March 26. Loading -appliances.- Relates to ordnance having breech mechanism of the wedge or sliding- block type and in which a loading-tray is used to position the ammunition behind the gun, and consists in the provision of a safety device so constructed and arranged that the breechactuating mechanism cannot perform its final movement to lock the breech and release the striker while the loading-tray is in the path of recoil, and the loading-tray cannot be moved from its safe position so long as the breech mechanism remains closed. In the form shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, the loading-tray B and a cam D move together about a vertical pivot. A second cam C is carried by the breech-actuating spindle. A rod C' sliding transversely in the breech end of the gun has a hooked end c<1> engaging a notch c in the cam C, and a loop at the opposite end to engage one arm d of a two-armed lever d, d<2> pivoted at d<1> on the gun cradle, the other arm d<2> being hooked to engage a notch on the cam D, and also acted upon by a spring d<2x>. The cams C, D are so arranged that, when the loading-tray is in the path of recoil, Fig. 4, the arms d<2>, d, rod C', hook c<1>, and notch c limit the movement of the spindle in the direction of the arrow, thus preventing the breech-actuating mechanism from performing its final movement. When the tray occupies the safe position, Fig. 2, the spindle may perform its full movement to close the breech, and the hooked end of the arm d<2> then engages the notch D<1> in the cam D and prevents movement of the tray while the breech is locked. As the breech is opened, the shoulder c<x>, Fig. 3, on the cam C will move the rod C' to disengage the parts d<2>, D<1>, leaving the tray free to move. In a modification, in which the loading-tray is mounted on a longitudinal shaft, the arm d<2> carries at its free end a roller which enters a notch in a disk carried by the shaft when the tray is in the safe position.
