Abstract
6374. Parker, S. E., and Forster, G. March 13. Buoys and buoyant fittings.-A buoyant mattress, cushion, or the like is composed of a framework of wood and cane, the cane portions 6, Fig. 1, connecting the wooden ends 17 being connected by loops or lengths of rope 1, 2, to which short pieces of rope 4 are attached. The ropes 4 project through the mattress or like casing 13, Fig. 3, and are provided at their ends with fasteners 9, by which a number of the mattresses may be connected together. When in ordinary use, the projecting fasteners 9 and 4 are covered by a strip of fabric 11, secured to the top edge of the mattress &c. and provided with press-buttons 12 adapted to engage the casing 13. Transverse strengthening-pieces 16 may be provided, and in the case of a circular cane framework these are of wood. In order that the sides of the mattress may be thickly padded, flexibly-jointed battens are secured to the sides of the frame parallel to the cane parts ; the battens are provided with holes for the passage of the ropes 4. A life-line is secured to the top edge of the mattress outside the fabric 11.
