Abstract

322,638. Knoll, W. Nov. 28, 1928. Spring surfaces.-In a spring seating or upholstery for chairs and other reclining furniture comprising adjacent parallel tension springs which together form the weight-supporting or resilient surface, the springs are individually enclosed in elastic fabric coverings. As shown in Fig. 1, the seat and back of a chair are formed of parallel tensioned springs b fixed to the frame a. The springs are protected by a covering of extensible material e, Fig. 6, and a cushion or a strip of fabric o may be placed over them. The springs may be secured to the frame by screws c and washers as shown in Fig. 3, or they may be passed through holes in the frame and held by hooks d on buttons g, Fig. 4. Instead of buttons g a bar may be provided with which the ends of the springs engage. The holes in the frame may be countersunk as shown to allow movement of the spring. In the method of securing shown in Fig. 6 a strap m is clamped by a batten n to the frame a and the spring engages with the eyelets l or with a stiffened edge of the strap.
