Abstract

549,917. Beds, mattresses, seats. HELLER, M. Nov. 25. 1941. No. 15182. [Classes 52 (ii) and 52 (iv)] An adjustable surface for beds, seats, &c., comprises flexible material 3 arranged between opposite members of a frame and two or more tensioning members adapted to be stretched by hand over one or more supports on the frame or on the surface. Fig. 1 shows a bunk having cross rails 2 between which is a flexible surface one end of which is attached to a rail 2 and the other provided with tensioning elements 4 comprises straps provided with buckles 5 attached to the other rail 2. Other forms show two flexible surfaces connected to the end rails by springs and joined by adjustable straps, or a single surface attached by springs to straps and by further springs to the end rail. Fig. 4 shows a double surface 3 passed around a roller 9 and having at one end a tensioning member 4 provided with knobs engaging a support 11 attached to the other end the tension being maintained by a leaf spring 10. Fig. 5 shows a flexible member 3 carrying a mattress 4 passed around the end of the frame and tensioned by straps underneath. Fig. 7 shows a folding bed having lever frame members 15 to a common member 18 the tensioning devices having various releasable fastening elements such as hooks 19 and eyelets, pressbuttons 20 and chain and hook 21. Fig. 8 shows a chain having a flexible element formed of a number of strips 24 tensioned by springs and straps 4. A seat is also described having transverse strips.
