[Class 52 (iv).] Upholstered furniture, motor-car upholstery, spring mattresses, and the like in which compression springs are used in combination with tension springs and rigid rails include a detachable frame or detachable connections from which rigid rails carrying compression springs G are resiliently suspended by means of tension springs A and means such as chains and springs H to prevent swaying of the rails. In one form, a chair seat is formed by the rails F, Fig. 1, being suspended from a frame B by the tension springs A. In the case of a settee seat two such frames B are placed side by side the top adjoining sides of the frame B being bent down and the centre rail being carried on a rod supported at each end by tension springs. In a modification, a mattress includes a frame D, Fig. 3, provided with hooks J from which the rails F are supported by the tension springs A. The mattress may be hinged for folding. In a further modification the rails are supported from detachable hook connections L, head and foot rails being provided for the chains and springs H. In order to give greater resiliency to a mattress in accordance with the invention it may be supported on brackets mounted on tension springs. The springs G may comprise a double layer and their tops may be laced together by chain and spring lacing K. Wire mesh may be used over the springs G.
