N0.215,579. Patented May 20,1879.
METER, i ,wl
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL J. DAILY, OF OARTHAGE, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,579, dated May 20, 1879 application filed March 6, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, S. J. DAILY, of Carthage, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in beds; and it consists in journaling two pairs of rollers in the end pieces, and stretching the ticking-which may be filled or not-over the two upper rollers, andfastening its ends to the two inner rollers in such a manner that when the rollers are turned by the levers which project from their outer sides the ticking will be more tightly stretched.
It further consists in the use of two pairs of rollers,
the inner ones of which have levers I projecting from their outer sides, and to these levers, at their outer ends, are fastened the supporting-wires which secure the bottom to the bedstead or other support.
It further consists-in the use of two sets of rollers, over which the ticking is stretched, and perforated end pieces, in which the said rollers arejournaled, whereby the ticking may be filled like a mattress for winter use, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
Figure l is a vertical cross-section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is an inverted View of the same.
n represents the frame of the bedstead, 1n which the bed-bottom is suspended. This bottom consists of the two end pieces, 0, in which are journaled the two outer rollers, d, over which the ticking e is stretched, and the two inner rollers, g, to which the ends of the ticking are fastened. The two end pieces, 0, are prevented from moving any nearer to each other by the shoulders on the rollers, and are kept from moving apart by any suitable fastening-strips i.
The ends of the ticking are passed over the tops of the rollers g, so that when the rollers are turned toward the right the ticking will be wrapped around them, and this tightened over the two upper rollers. In order to cause the rollers to turn and stretch the ticking in proportion to the weight upon it, the levers h are stuck into or fastened to their outer sides,
and to the outer ends of these levers are fastened the wire springs or rods 0, the upper ends of which catch over the tops of the bedstead a, or into any castings attached thereto. These levers are here shown as being suspended from above, but it is evident that they will operate equally as well if allowed to rest upon slats or the bed-frame.
It will readily be seen that when any weight is brought to bear upon this bottom the outer ends of these levers remain stationary, while the inner ends and the rollers g, together with the whole bottom, sink downward, thereby causing the rollers g to turn partially around toward the right, and thus stretch the ticking in proportion to the weight brought to bear upon it. I
Through the ends of the end pieces, 0, are made the openings 7, through which the ticking may be filled with cotton, shucks, hair, or any other suitable packing, so that the bed will be made warm enough for winters use. In the summer this filling may be removed, so as to make the bed cool and pleasant to sleep upon, and that without removing the rollers in order to get access to the inside.
Any suitable tools may be used in inserting and removing this filling.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a bed-bottom, the combination of end pieces, 0, outer rollers, (I, inner rollers, g, provided with supporting-levers, substantially as described, and the ticking e, the rollers g bein g made to tighten the ticking, as described.
2. The combination of the end pieces, 0, rollers 11 g, ticking e, levers h, and springs or rods 0, as set forth.
3. The end pieces, 0, having the openings r for the insertion and removal of suitable filling, in combination with the rollers d, over which the ticking is stretched, supportinglevers, and the. central rollers, g, placed under the center of the bottom, andwhich form a support for the ticking and its filling, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of February, 1879.
SAMUEL J. DAILY.
Witnesses R. F. BULER, S. O. WOODRUFF.
