UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT L. PAGE AND JOSEPH P. CARPENTER, OF FORREST, ILLINOIS.
COUCH OR LOUNGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,018, dated March 1, 1898.
Application filed J l 30,1897. Serial No. 646,521. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that we, ALBERT L. PAGE and JOSEPH P. CARPENTER, of Forrest, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Couches or Lounges; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in couches or lounges; and it pertains to a couch or lounge having a removable mattress and cover section, removable and adjustable spring-section, and a removable pillow or head section, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The primary object of our invention is to provide a couch with a removable mattress and cover section adapted to be attached to and detached from the body of the lounge, cooperating with an adjustable spring-section, whereby the tension of the springs can be regulated, as also the mattress and cover section removed to permit access to the springs and other parts of the lounge either for the. purpose of repairs or for cleaning.
Another object of our invention is to provide the mattress and cover section with a spring-frame whereby the upholstering is held in much better shape and which also serves to make the couch or lounge softer and more pleasing to sit upon.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a couch or lounge embodying our invention, a part of the upholstering being broken away to show the inte- Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the removable mattress and cover section. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the I Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View through the center of the lounge. Fig. 5 is a detached View of one of the latches for holding the mattress-section to the couch-frame. Fig. 6 is a detached View of one of the screws and cups by means of which the spring-section is adj usted vertically.
Referring now to the drawings, A indicates the frame of a couch, which may be of any desired form, and B a removable mattress and cover section frame resting upon the upper edge of the couch-frame A. This mattress-frame B is of an interior size equal to the interior size of the couch-frame A, for the purpose of permitting the vertical movement of the spring-frame O, situated within the couch-frame A.
Extending transversely of the couch-frame are the bars D, upon which the spring-frame O rests when in its lowest position, and passing vertically through the centers of these bars D are the vertical screw-threaded rods a, carrying at their lower ends the bevelgears 01, meshing with the bevel-gears 6 upon a transversely-journaled shaft g. This shaft g is supported through the medium of brackets 01, extending downward from the bars D. Upon the shaft g is an operating-wheel f, by means of which the shaft 9 is rotated in either direction for the purpose of revolving the vertical screw-threaded rods a. Fixed within the end bars of the spring-frame are the screwthreaded cups g, which receive the screwthreaded ends of the rods a, and through the medium of these rods and cups the springframe is readily adjusted vertically, as will be readily understood. The spring-frame is provided with any desired number of springsupporting slats 77., upon which the springs 2' are secured, their upper ends resting under and against the mattressframe B. The mattress and its covering or upholstering are secured to the mattress-frame B and are removable therewith for the purpose of permitting free access to the spring-frame and the springs for the purpose of cleaning or repairing any broken or disarranged part thereof. This mattress-frame B is attached to the couchframe A through the medium of catches H, which consists of a member 2, attached to the mattress-frame, to which is pivoted a catch 3, the latter adapted to interlock with the curved member 4, attached to the main frame A, whereby the mattress-frame may be attached to or detached from'the main frame. I
i The spring-frame is provided with a suitable number of. small rollers I, by means of which the frame is held in its proper position for moving vertically without any binding action.
A pillow-frame J is provided and attached to the head or pillow portion K through the medium of catches H, or, if desired, the pillowframe J and the head K may be provided, respectively, with a tongue and groove for allowing the attachment and detachment of the pillow-frame, as will be readily understood.
In operation the spring-frame is lowered upon the transverse bars D, the mattressframe raised in position, and the catches secured for holding it in place. Then by the rotation of the operating-shaft d the springframe can be elevated to carry the springs in contact with the under side of the mattress to any desired tension. This arrangement allows the ready adjustment of the tension of the springs at any time to suit the caprice of the user. It also permits, as previously stated, the removal of the mattress-frame, and this is accomplished by fi rst lowering the spring-frame to carry the springs out of contact with the mattress, when the latches can be readily released and the mattress-frame removed.
It will be noted that the spring-frame is of a size adapted to move within the couch and mattress frame, which permits of the greatest possible adjustment of the spring-frame and without any interference from any parts.
From the above description it will be noted that we have provided a simple arrangement for removing the parts of a couch by providing separate spring and mattress frames, the former being vertically adjustable and the latter adapted to be connected and disconnected with the couch-frame.
The mattress -frame is provided with a spring-frame L, supported at its inner ends a suitable distance thereabove by a block or transverse bar M, to which the inner end of the spring-frame is rigidly attached. The opposite and outer end of the spring-frame projects over the adjacent end of the mattressframe and is provided with springs of a suitable tension and number between the two frames. This construction efiects a saving in the wear upon the upholstering and at the same time produces an easy and pleasing couch to sit or lie upon.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A couch comprising a main frame, a separate mattress-section, movable connecting members between said section and the main frame for detaching them, a separate movable spring-section situated below the mattress-section, and elevating members carried by the main frame and engaging the springframe, whereby the latter can be elevated or lowered, substantially as described.
2. An improved couch comprising a main frame, a rigid mattress-frame placed thereon and members carried by the mattress and main frames adapted to detachably connect them, a mattress attached to said mattressframe, a spring-frame movable within the main frame, and springs attached to the spring-frame and loosely engaging said mattress, substantially as described.
3. A couch comprising a main frame, separate heads and mattress-sections and the main frame, movable connecting members between the said sections, a separate spring-section situated below themattress section, and elevating members carried by the couch-frame engaging the spring-frame whereby the latter can be elevated or lowered, substantially as described.
4. A couch comprising a couch-frame, vertical screw-rods supported thereby, a springframe engaged by the screw-rods, a longitudinal operating-shaft meshing geared to the screw-rod, a mattress-frame above and independent of the spring-frame, and connecting members between the mattress-frame and the couch-frame independent of the spring-frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT L. PACE. JOSEPH P. CARPENTER.
