Description

June 12, 1956 B. FINER SPRING BACK CHAIR Filed Feb. 9, 1954 INVENTOR Baewme 0 F/lvaz ATTORNEY United States Patent SPRING BACK CHAIR Bernard Finer, Forest Hills, N. Y. Application February 9, 1954, Serial No. 409,216
1 Claim. (Cl. 155179) The invention relates to a reclining chair.
It is the main object of the invention to improve the sitting comfort of the chair.
It is a further object of the invention to eliminate the sometimes very disagreeable pressure action created by the customary back rests of the chairs onto the person reclining in the chair.
With these and additional objects in view which will become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention will now be described more in detail and with reference to the attached drawing illustrating a preferred em bodiment thereof.
In the drawing,
Fig. l is a perspective view of the instant reclining chair;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal view on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view similar to Fig. 2 of a further modification of the invention; and
Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
The reclining chair shown in the drawing, is in the customary manner provided with feet 8, a seat 9, and a back rest.
This back rest, forming the invention characteristics of the chair, is composed of two rearwardly inclined lateral tubular rods 1 connected with the seat 9. The two rods 1 are connected by vertically superposed sinuous-shaped springs 3 of a slightly resilient material and preferably of a resilient steel.
These sinuous-shaped springs 3 enter into the tubular rods 1, Fig. 2, and encircle with their circularly bent ends 4 the rods 5 axially located in the tubes 1.
In conformity with Fig. 4 the sinuous-shaped springs 3 are enclosed by a tubular cover 6.
As further apparent from Fig. 1 a slightly outwardly bent rod 7 located underneath the spirally shaped rods 3 connect the two lateral rods 1.
As apparent from the above the back rest of the chair is composed of upper resilient members 3 and a lower solid rod member 7.
It is important that the upper resilient back members 3 enter into the lateral member 1 and embrace with their ends the inner rods 5. In this manner and in combination with the lower rod 7 a comfortable support is secured for the back of the seated person.
By adjusting the resilient members or spirals 3 the resiliency and the sitting capacity of the chair can be varied.
Since certain changes may be made in the above article and different embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
In a reclining chair, a seat, a back rest consisting of two lateral rearwardly inclined and downwardly converging tubular supports attached at their lower ends to said seat, center rods in said tubular supports ending short of the upper ends of the same, a plurality of vertically and spacedly superposed horizontal bow-shaped springs having a sinuous configuration, entering said tubular supports with their ends embracing said center rods, said spring being enclosed by a tubular cover and a bow-shaped cross-rod connecting said tubular supports and being located underneath the lowest of said horizontal springs.
