Description

UNITED $TATES PATENT *rrron.
GEORGE A. FANJOY, OF WILLIAMSBUBG, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDRENS SWINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 164326, dated June 22, 1375 application filed May 22, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. FANJOY, of \Nilliamsburg, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement insupporting-cords being cut away.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved ch'ilds swing, the seat of which shall be so constructed that it may be readily adjusted to the size of the child sitting in it, which will hold the child securely, and which may be packed in small compass for storage and transportation.
The invention consists in an elastic back for a swing-seat, made of a strip of hard elastic wood, bent into proper form, and having a strip of metal attached to its outer side; in the combination of the straps with the ends of the elastic back, and with the forward edge of the seat; and in the combination of the connecting-straps with the elastic back, and with the side and rear edges of the seat, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the seat, which is made of board, of somewhat semicircular form, and of a convenient size. The seat A is provided with an upholstered cushion,B. O is the back, which is made of a thin strip of hickory, ash, or other suitable hard and elastic wood, and which is bent into proper shape, and strengthened by a thin strip of iron or other elastic metal, attached to its outer side, so as to allow it to be made small and light, and at the same time have sufficient strength. To one end of the back 0 is attached a buckle, by means of a short leather strap or other convenient means, and to its other end is attached a leather strap, D, so that by buckling the strap D the back 0 may be drawn in around the childs waist, and may thus confine the child securely in his seat. E is a strap, the upper end of which has a loop formed in it to receive the strap D, and its lower end 'is secured to the center of the forward edge of the seat A.
The strap E is designed to be passed between the childs legs, to keep him from slipping 011 the seat forward. The back 0 is connected with the rear and side edges of the seat A by straps F, of webbing or other cloth or leather, so as to be flexible, to allow the back 0 to be drawn together to fit the child. The middle parts of the straps F are connected and held in their proper relativepositions by a strap, G, of the same or similar material as the said strap F. This allows the back 0 to be laid upon the seat A, so that the swing may be packed compactly for storage and transportation. H are two pairs of ropes or cords, the
forward one of each pair of which is attached to a forward corner of the seat A, and to an end of the back 0. The rear ropes are attached to the seat A and back '0, in such positions as to properly balance the seat. The upper ends of the ropes H of each pair are brought together, and are attached to an iron eye, to receive the hooks by which the swing is suspended.
The ropes H of each pair may be a single rope, having the eye secured to the center.
The swing may be suspended from the top bar of a door-frame, or from a bar supported by posts or frames, or from any other suitable support.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An elastic back, 0, for a swing-seat, made of a strip of hard elastic wood, bent into proper form, and having a strip of metal attached to its outer side, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the straps D E with the ends of the elastic back 0, and with the forward edge of the seat A, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination of the straps F G with the elastic back 0, and with the side and rear edges of the seat A, substantially as herein shown and described.
GEORGE A. FANJOY.
