Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In engines in which the working chamber is in open communication with a primary explosion chamber and in which ignition is effected by the heat of compression, the primary explosion chamber is divided into two compartments 4, 5, which may communicate with each other through channels 6. A spraying-device having straight grooves 8 which intersect with spiral grooves 9 formed on the interior of the sleeve 3 may be placed between the chamber 4 and the combustion chamber. In another form, the connexion between the chambers 4, 5 is formed by the space above the sleeve 3, and there is no spraying-device at the lower end of the sleeve.
